How the RSI Indicator Works

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) uses a 14-period calculation on a 0–100 scale, comparing the magnitude of recent gains to recent losses. RSI measures the speed and strength of momentum to identify overbought and oversold market conditions.

RSI Below 30 – Oversold

RSI below 30 indicates oversold conditions — sustained selling pressure relative to recent price action. Long setups often emerge when RSI recovers from oversold territory, but oversold does not guarantee an immediate bounce, especially in strong downtrends.

RSI Above 70 – Overbought

RSI Divergence

Bearish divergence occurs when price makes a new high but RSI fails to reach a new high — weakening upside momentum.
